The Refugees
Zanabu Divovo is among the thousands of refugees who have fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo over the last twenty years, seeking to escape the violence, malaria, diarrhea and malnutrition that have come in the wake of multiple civil wars that have ravaged the DRC.
Temporarily, Zanabu landed in the Osire Refugee Settlement in Namibia, where she gave birth to a daughter, Issa, and was reunited with her lost son, allowing the family to begin the process of building a new life and recover from their losses, which included the murder of Zanabu's husband and the death of a daughter who was brutally raped.
In 2010, Zanabu moved her family of six into this two room house in Katutura, outside Windhoek. Her school age children are now attending a local school.
Zanabu and two of her children share this stark but colorful room while the remaining family members sleep together in the main living area, which serves as the kitchen too.
Zanabu labors in the hot Namibia sun from dawn to dusk, selling the goods she carries daily from her home about a mile away.
A matriarch's work is never done. Zanabu's after-work duties include a turn at the stove, prepping food for her Katatura family.
Fatima lives with her mom, Zanabu, and four brothers in Katutura, the largest neighborhood in Windhoek, Namibia. Fluent in English, Fatima helps her Swahili-and-French speaking mom navigate the country that has just informed them that their legal status in Namibia will expire soon. The amazing resilience of Zanabu's children is expressed best by Fatima. " I want to go to a place where there are opportunities for me to do what I want," says Fatima. " I want to get on stage and sing. I want to be the next Beyonce. I want to be a psychologist. I want to help and inspire people."
